Protect water and food security through the rains

Heavy rain threatens stored grain, clean water and young crops. Steps to protect water and food security before the peak of the season.

Follow official Kenya Meteorological Department and county government alerts. SACEP Kenya messages support, and do not replace, official warnings.

As the October–December rains build, protecting water and food is as important as protecting the crop in the field.

Raise stored grain and pulses off the floor on pallets or stands, and check roofs and store doors for leaks now — not after the first storm. Move sacks away from walls that sweat moisture.

Protect water points. Clear runoff channels away from wells and storage tanks, cover water containers, and treat or boil drinking water if flooding reaches your area. Floodwater carries contamination you cannot see.

Dry and store early harvests properly. Grain that goes into storage damp grows mould and develops mycotoxins that no amount of cooking removes. If food has been touched by floodwater, do not eat it or feed it to animals.

SACEP Kenya will continue to share advisories through this season. Follow official Kenya Meteorological Department and county government alerts at all times.
