Kitchen gardens and nutrition

In the drier parts of Tharaka Nithi and Meru, many households have little land and unreliable water. SACEP Kenya trains families, women's groups, youth groups and schools to grow vegetables all year using compact, water-wise garden models.

What we do

  • Hands-on training for vulnerable households, women's groups, youth groups and schools
  • Climate-smart garden models: vertical, conical, multi-storey, hanging and mandala gardens
  • Practical nutrition sessions so harvests translate into healthier meals
  • Water-wise techniques such as mulching, greywater reuse and drip watering
  • Follow-up visits so gardens survive beyond the training day

Each garden model suits a different situation. Vertical and multi-storey gardens use height where ground space is short. Conical and mandala gardens concentrate water and compost where it matters most. Hanging gardens work on verandas and walls.

The aim is simple: a household that can pick sukuma wiki, managu, spinach or tomatoes steps from the kitchen door, in the dry season as well as the rains.

Who we work with

  • Vulnerable households in Lower Tharaka Nithi and drier Meru
  • Women's and youth self-help groups
  • Primary and secondary schools
  • Community health and nutrition volunteers
