Prepare your farm now: heavy rains advisory
Forecasts point to heavy October–December rains. Seven things to do on your farm this week, before the storms arrive.
Follow official Kenya Meteorological Department and county government alerts. SACEP Kenya messages support, and do not replace, official warnings.
Weather forecasts indicate heavy rains through the October–December season in Tharaka Nithi, Meru and neighbouring counties. What you do in the next two weeks decides whether this rain is a blessing or a loss.
This week: clear and repair drainage channels and cut-off drains; check your roof, grain store and chicken house for leaks; move livestock away from rivers and low ground.
Next: secure seed, feed and agro-chemicals on raised, dry platforms; harvest what is ready rather than leaving it in the field; and agree within your household who does what if flooding comes at night.
Finally, make sure your phone can receive warnings — and that your neighbours can too. Sign up for SACEP Kenya farmer alerts and check on one neighbour who has no smartphone.
