Protect soil, crops and livestock before the storms

Cut-off drains, safe ground for animals and secure poultry — practical steps to keep this season's rain from becoming this season's loss.

Follow official Kenya Meteorological Department and county government alerts. SACEP Kenya messages support, and do not replace, official warnings.

The same rain that grows the crop can take the soil with it. Prepare now, while the ground is still workable.

Soil: open and repair cut-off drains above cultivated land, lay trash lines and cover crops on slopes, and clear blocked waterways so runoff has somewhere safe to go.

Crops: where possible, harvest what is ready, earth up young stands, and avoid cultivating steep wet ground. Keep seed for next season sealed, raised and dry.

Livestock: move animals from riverbanks and low ground early — not when water is already rising. Repair poultry housing, secure feed stores, and know your highest safe ground before you need it.

These steps cost hours. The losses they prevent cost seasons. Follow official Kenya Meteorological Department and county government alerts; SACEP Kenya advisories support, and do not replace, official warnings.
