Liquid biofertiliser is a fermented plant-and-manure tea: fast to make, cheap, and absorbed quickly by crops. It complements compost — it does not replace it.
You will need
- A drum or large jerrycan with a lid
- Fresh green material: comfrey, tithonia, stinging nettle or healthy weeds
- Well-rotted or fresh livestock manure
- Water — non-chlorinated if possible
- Molasses to feed fermentation (a handful per drum)
Steps
- Fill the drum one-third with chopped green material and manure in roughly equal parts.
- Top up with water, stir in the molasses, and cover loosely — gas must escape but flies must stay out.
- Stir every day or two. Fermentation takes two to three weeks in warm weather.
- The brew is ready when the bubbling slows and the smell settles to a rich, earthy sourness.
- Strain and dilute — about one part brew to ten parts water — before watering at the base of crops.
Cautions
Always dilute before use; undiluted brew burns tender plants. Apply to soil, not leaves you will eat soon. Keep records of dilution and results so you can adjust to your own soil.
