Natural resource management

Farming in a dryland depends on how well the land, water and trees around it are managed. SACEP Kenya supports integrated natural resource management (INRM) built on four principles: healthy ecosystems, secure natural resources, resilient livelihoods and empowered communities.

What we do

  • Water harvesting: farm ponds, zai pits, half-moons and swales that hold rain where it falls
  • Drip irrigation and other water-efficient watering methods
  • Cover cropping and mulching to protect soil between crops
  • Agroforestry: the right trees in the right places on farms
  • Community planning so grazing, firewood and water use stay within limits

None of these practices works alone. A swale without cover crops still loses soil; a borehole without community rules still runs dry. INRM means managing the pieces together, with the community in the lead.

Who we work with

  • Farming households on degraded land
  • Water resource users' associations
  • Community groups managing shared land
