Market linkages and value addition

Growing a good crop is only half the job. SACEP Kenya works with farmer groups to reach organic and other better-paying markets, and to keep more of the value of what they grow through post-harvest handling, grading, packaging and branding.

What we do

  • Linking organised farmer groups to buyers seeking organic and traceable produce
  • Post-harvest handling training to cut losses between farm and market
  • Grading, packaging and simple branding that buyers recognise
  • Aggregation: bulking produce together to meet volumes buyers need
  • Basic record-keeping so groups can negotiate from evidence

Income is the priority here. A farmer who sells graded, well-packed produce to a known buyer earns more and plans better than one selling ungraded produce at the farm gate.

We work with groups rather than individuals because buyers want volume, consistency and a single point of contact — things one smallholder rarely provides alone.

Who we work with

  • Organised farmer and producer groups
  • Women's groups with marketable produce
  • Youth exploring aggregation and trading
